Down on the Farm

When you consider what makes a rural property stand out, it’s often the color coordination of the outbuildings and fences that make you think, “Wow, that’s a nice place.”

In previous blog entries we’ve talked about protecting your investments. This is true with outbuildings as well. You may not give some of your barns and sheds the same priority as the house, but when you consider replacement costs (especially with today’s material costs), the protection you get from quality paint throughout the property is well worth the investment.

Cutting corners on paint products and application processes will likely cost your more in the long run. Consider rundown looking properties with faded and peeling paint. It will take even more work to get these back up to speed.

If you are ready to get your rural property up to the level you’ve always dreamed, give us a call.

Pro Finish for T1-11

Schedule Paint Doctors Painting for soon after the siding is installed.

According to the The Engineered Wood Association, real wood surfaced siding comes in several configurations including reverse board and batten, T1-11, and channel groove.

Weather can cause damage to the raw products within a few weeks so schedule Paint Doctors Painting for soon after the siding is installed. The APA recommends an all-acrylic latex house paint system of primer and topcoat.

We know the prep and application techniques to finish your T1-11 type siding for long lasting protection and beauty. Getting proper penetration and thorough coverage requires experience and extra work – often a combination of spray and back rolling because of the texture of the wood fibers.

Repaint should be done before the surface shows deterioration and peeling. If UV and weather damage are present it may take some extra work to get the walls prepped for paint. We can explain these details after looking at your building.

Painting Kitchen Cabinets

Upgrading your kitchen with some vibrant color changes is a trend these days. A change in color scheme can make a big difference. Check out some cabinet project information at Sherwin-Williams.

Call the Paint Doctor for professional help because this project comes with a WARNING: Removal of old paint by sanding, scraping or other means may generate dust or fumes that contain lead. Exposure to lead dust or fumes may cause brain damage or other adverse health effects, especially in children or pregnant women. Controlling exposure to lead or other hazardous substances requires the use of proper protective equipment, such as a properly fitted respirator (NIOSH approved) and proper containment and cleanup. For more information, call the National Lead Information Center at 1-800-424-LEAD (in US) or contact your local health authority.

After removing the hardware, we recommend that the cabinets be thoroughly cleaned with a good cleaner degreaser to remove all grease and oils that normally buildup on kitchen cabinetry over time. Once cleaned, we recommend applying a test sample of Extreme Bond Primer in an inconspicuous area.

Let the primer dry at least 24 hours and sand again using a “very fine” grit sandpaper. Gently smooth out the primer coat, then wipe the primed cabinets with a damp cloth to remove any debris before applying your first coat of paint.

Using a 1″ or a 1½” angled brush, first apply paint to the recessed or detailed areas of the cabinet door. Avoid getting brush marks on the flatter and smoother areas. Next, immediately paint the remaining flat areas of the door using a mini roller. Gently roll over any overlapping brush marks or paint drips to smooth the surface.

Let your first coat dry for about 24-48 hours, then apply a second coat in the same manner. Again, wait 24-48 hours and once the second coat is dry, you can reinstall your existing hardware, or add new hardware to complete the makeover.

Painting PPE

The Paint Doctor knows personal protective equipment (PPE) for jobsite safety. This knowledge starts with the chemical characteristics of the product being applied. We take all of the precautionary steps to mitigate against harmful vapors and the products which can be invasive through the skin.

It’s another good reason to call the pros!

Touch-up Paint

Feathering is the final key to a good touch up job.

I doesn’t take long before feet, furniture, fur babies and family members get some scuffs going on your painted walls. Not everything washes off which is why touch-up is an important way to keep your walls in the best possible condition.

The Right Paint

The most important aspect of touchup is to use the same type, color and sheen of paint. Paint Doctor’s Painting leaves building owners with extra of each paint color. Be sure to thoroughly stir the paint before using.

Tools and Techniques

Whenever possible, “use the same tool to apply the touch-up paint as was used to apply the original coat,” according to Sherwin-Williams. With practice, you can use a good quality paint brush to do most touch-ups by loading the brush and making as few passes over the target area as possible – just enough to smooth it reasonably well. Quality paint will self-level if you don’t overwork it.

Feathering

Feathering is the final key to a good touch up job. As the brush gets dryer, lightly move it away from the repair area out over the larger surrounding area. The further away you get from the center, less paint is being applied. This eliminates a hard edge where the new paint stops abruptly. The area surrounding the repair will have a mix of the existing paint and the touch-up paint which creates a blend.

Cleanup

Remember to carefully reseal your touch-up paint container and thoroughly clean your paint brush. Try to keep kids and pets away from the touch-up area until the paint is dry to touch.

Call the Doctor

When you hire the pros at Paint Doctor’s Painting, you get an entire crew doing all of those difficult painting operations at once with the speed and accuracy that comes with doing the job right the first time every time.

Paint Doctor’s Painting would love to transform your interior spaces with the color of your choosing or give some new curb appeal to your exterior. Call Mike at 541-497-3804.
When you consider the amount of time involved in doing your own paint project compared to hiring the Doctor, we think you will agree. Many property owners significantly underestimate what it takes to wash, prep, caulk, fill, sand, scrape, mask, pack, place, climb, spray, roll, brush, move and do it all again.
However, when you hire the pros at Paint Doctor’s Painting, you get an entire crew that is doing all of these operations at once with the speed and accuracy that comes with doing the job right the first time every day. Rather than having your house in that paint-job-in-process mode for weeks, you can have the whole job completed in a day or two.
Consider also the safety factor. We have the equipment and knowledge to do the job safely. When you consider how each time you move a ladder and reset it you have to get it just right and even then you are climbing, reaching and working off that ladder… Better left to the pros.
