Interior Gathering Spaces

If you build it, they will come. And if you carve out that space in a deep charcoal and envelope it in a rich burgundy, they will gather. Social nooks are places to find inspiration in friends and family and creative color choices can be just the thing to make it happen.

HGTV Color of the Year 2024

HGTV Home® by Sherwin-Williams has selected Persimmon as the color of the year for this collection. The curators say, “Persimmon pulls from grounded, earthy origins, to deliver a shade that feels both uplifting and refreshing. An earthy terracotta infused with tangerine tones, naturally inspired colors like perfect Persimmon are being incorporated to soften spaces and add a personal touch to the home.”

Notice how the glasses, vase, and napkin pickup the color theme.

The Art of Choosing an Interior Color

Often a good place to begin with color selection is with some furniture or other décor items you already own. The crew at your local Sherwin-Williams store is accustomed with people bringing in art pieces, pillows, fabric samples or a cabinet drawer to get color matched. Call Mike to take it to the next step and see your artistic vision become a reality. 541.497.3804

The wall color in this photo matches some of the blues in the painting. The pillow also has complementary colors.

How Much Paint Do I Need?

Sherwin-Williams offers these helpful tips for the amount of painted need for a project:

  1. First calculate the square feet of space that will be coated.
  2. Determine how many square feet a gallon of the intended product will cover.
  3. Divide the number of square feet to be covered by the number of square feet that a given product can cover.

For example, if the product covers 400 square feet, and you are coating 1,000 square feet (1,000 divided by 400 = 2.5), you will need 2.5 gallons. 400 square feet is theoretical because the texture of the substrate, along with the material left on the applicator, and other tools, are not part of this calculation. This information is often available on the data page for the product as well.

Interior Paint Options

According to Sherwin-Williams, the type of paint you’ll use depends on how the room to be painted will be used and the type of finish you want.

Interior paint is specifically formulated to provide:

  • Scrubbability and stain resistance
  • Good hiding ability
  • Good coverage
  • Spatter resistance
  • Easy touch-up

Latex or Oil?

Interior house paints are either latex- or oil/alkyd-based. Today, most oil-based paints are made with synthetic resins (alkyds), which makes them the best type of paint for interior walls when compared to paints based comprised on natural oils. Each has different characteristics and uses.

Your neighborhood Sherwin-Williams paint expert can provide advice about which paint is right for your project.

Latex

Get the longest-lasting finish with the best gloss retention. Sherwin-Williams latex paints are easy to work with, dry quickly and are extremely durable. Latex paints clean up easily with soap and water.

Oil/Alkyd

Good adhesion, excellent durability and stain resistance make Sherwin-Williams oil/alkyd-based paints excellent choices for trim in high-traffic rooms, such as kitchens and bathrooms. Clean paint tools with mineral spirits.

Choosing the Right White

It’s interior painting season for the Paint Doctor and our clients often say they want white walls. Right, but what white? What do you mean? Isn’t white white? Well that’s a complicated question. When it comes to paint colors, almost every white is not quite, um, white. They all have some tint and the tints put them in different families of colors that are often described as temperatures and even as moods.

Mike can tell you what’s up with whites and help you schedule your interior paint project – 541-497-3804.

Prepare to be Amazed

Put down the brush and step away from the building. There is a lot more to painting than brushing, rolling or spraying paint. In fact, all skilled painters understand that most of the job in painting is preparation. Cleaning is essential. Paint cannot adhere when debris in the way.

Peeling paint must be removed or treated. Repair or replace loose or weather damaged siding and trim. Fill holes. Caulk joints.

Don’t overlook masking – this is a task that can make or break the quality of the paint job itself and prevent damaging other surfaces. The right masking materials (tape, paper, plastic sheeting, etc) make a big difference in the results. Clean, straight lines are not automatic. It takes lots of practice to get it right. Understanding the dynamics of the air pressures produced by pressurized paint and how to layer masking, use guards and drop cloths are all big components of a job well done.

Of course you can bring in the pros to do the job right the first time, call Mike at 541-497-3804.
