How to Spackle a Nail Hole
Preparation
- Clear Debris: Remove any loose material or protruding wall fragments around the hole to ensure a flat surface.
- Create a Dimple (Optional): For a more flush finish, use the handle of a putty knife or a hammer to lightly press the edges of the hole inward, creating a small “dimple” for the spackle to sit in.
- Address Anchors: If there is a plastic anchor in the hole, either pull it out with pliers or drive it slightly below the wall surface with a screwdriver and hammer before filling.
Application
- Apply Spackle: Use a flexible putty knife or your finger (for very small holes) to press a small amount of spackle into the hole.
- Overfill Slightly: Spackle can shrink as it dries. Apply slightly more than needed so it sits just above the surface of the wall.
- Wipe Excess: Carefully wipe away excess spackle from the surrounding wall with a damp cloth or the edge of your putty knife to minimize sanding later and to avoid changing the texture of the surrounding area.
Finishing
- Dry Time: Let the spackle dry completely. Depending on the product and hole size, this can take anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hours.
- Sand Smooth: Once dry, use a fine-grit sanding sponge or sandpaper (220-grit) to lightly sand the patch until it is perfectly flush with the wall.
- Clean Dust: Wipe away any sanding dust with a clean, dry rag or tack cloth.
- Paint: Apply a small amount of matching paint over the patch. For the best results, use a small brush and “feather” the edges to blend it into the existing wall texture.

Here in the Willamette Valley mildew can form on the north side of houses due to the lack of direct sunlight, which keeps the surface cooler and moister. Less sunlight means slower evaporation, which helps the surface stay damp longer promoting mildew growth. Mildew mitigation is an important step when preparing to paint the exterior of your home. One solution? Wash with a solution of TSP.
TSP Safety
- Protective gear: It’s a good idea to wear eye protection, chemical-resistant gloves, and long sleeves and pants.
- Ventilation: Ensure the area is well-ventilated, especially when working indoors.
- Protect surfaces: TSP can damage some surfaces, including metal fixtures and glass. Use plastic sheeting to protect areas you do not want to clean.
- Mixing: Add TSP powder to warm water, not the other way around, to prevent splashing. Typical dilutions range from 1/4 to 1/2 cup of TSP per gallon of warm water, depending on the job.
- Rinse thoroughly: After cleaning, rinse the surface multiple times with clean water to remove all TSP residue. If not completely rinsed, it can leave a white film.
- Protect landscaping: If using TSP outdoors, take care to protect plants from runoff by hosing them down with fresh water both before and after applying the solution.
